What is Discern & Decide?
A twelve-part video series on the principles of decision-making formulated by St. Ignatius of Loyola — a way of making decisions by actively seeking God's will, for the large questions and the daily ones alike.
Who is it for?
Adults of any age, and any starting point. The material is approachable, conversational and full of illustration, whether you're a devout believer, spiritual but not religious, or asking questions about faith you haven't asked before.
How long does it take?
Each episode runs fifteen to twenty minutes. With time for reflection, expect about an hour per episode. Groups and individuals go at very different paces — daily, weekly, or two episodes at a sitting.
How are the episodes organised?
Episodes 1–2 introduce Ignatius and his story. 3–4 teach and then practise the Examen prayer. 5–6 give the guidelines for discernment, 7–8 the subtler ones for hearing God's voice. 9–10 open up the imagination tools, and 11–12 look at how to evaluate a decision once you've made it.
What does "discernment" actually mean?
A prayerful, reflective way of making decisions that brings your life into line with God's will. Much of it is learning to tell consolation — movement toward God — from desolation, movement away.
Who was St. Ignatius?
A Spanish soldier turned mystic (1491–1556) who founded the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits. A cannonball wound and a long convalescence turned him toward God, and he wrote the Spiritual Exercises out of what he learned.
Can I do this on my own?
Yes. Many people do. You can also join a group later, or start one — nothing about beginning alone closes that off.
I have a prayer group. How do we start?
Any size works. Choose "with a small group" or "across a parish" above, and you'll get a join link to share. For a group of fewer than about six, it usually costs less for each person to buy their own access than to buy a licence — the page will tell you so when you set your group's size.
Can I share my access link with someone else?
Please invite them instead. An invitation gives them their own sign-in, their own place in the series, and their own private journal, none of which a shared link can do.
Can I watch on my phone?
Yes — phone, tablet, laptop or desktop.
Can I download the videos, or get them on DVD?
The series is streaming only.
